Dr Melissa Butt is a dynamic educator and advocate for accessible science education. With a background in academia and a dedication to teaching, training teachers and leading school improvement strategies, she has made significant contributions to the field of education at an international level. Following her PhD in Kidney Disease research at The University of Sheffield, Dr Melissa Butt transitioned into secondary school science education. Her commitment to excellence led her to take on Science and STEM leadership roles in outstanding UK and UAE schools. One of Dr Melissa Butt's hallmark achievements has been her dedication to making science education inclusive and engaging. Her strategies for enhancing science education have been published in journals such as the Association for Science Education, School Science Review. Additionally, Dr Melissa Butt has been invited to speak at numerous international (UAE, China, USA, Mexico and Pakistan) conferences, where she shared her expertise in STEM education with educators from around the world. Driven by a desire to make a difference, 10 years ago, Dr Melissa Butt founded Discovery STEM Education, a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting STEM education. She leads her team of staff to develop innovative programmes, train experienced teachers and undergraduate teachers at the University of Sheffield. Through Discovery STEM Education, she has been instrumental in supporting schools across the world to foster a love for STEM subjects among students of all backgrounds. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to science education, Dr Melissa Butt was honoured with the Helen Sharman Award for Science in the Inspirational Women of Sheffield's Awards in 2022. This award is a testament to her impact in the field of education. Beyond her work with Discovery STEM Education, Dr Melissa Butt is involved in shaping STEM education frameworks. She serves as a board member for the UK Skills in Education, Robotics and Autonomous Systems (SERAS) task force, where she contributes her expertise to the development of initiatives focused on emerging technologies. Additionally, as a member of the UAE AI Educators Task Force, she plays a role in advising government policymakers and coordinating teacher training to ensure that educators are equipped with the skills to prepare students for the future.
